Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers made a seizure of 4,844 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes at Woodlands checkpoint on 6 February 2017 at about 3.20pm.
It said that its officers directed a Malaysia-registered lorry, driven by a lone 50-year-old male Malaysian, for further checks upon its arrival.
ICA said that its officers had noticed anomalies in the scanned images of the lorry declared to contain a consignment of cooking oil. During the course of checks, officers found duty-unpaid cigarettes hidden in one of the boxes among the consignment. Further checks on a few other boxes revealed more duty-unpaid cigarettes.
ICA then said that the driver, the exhibits and the lorry were handed over to the Singapore Customs for further investigations.
According to ICA, the potential duty as well as Goods and Services Tax of the duty-unpaid cigarettes evaded amounted to about S$382,600 and S$23,320 respectively. The vehicle used in the commission of such offences is liable to be forfeited.

ICA stated that it will continue to conduct security checks on passengers and vehicles at the checkpoints to prevent attempts to smuggle in undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives and other contrabands, noting that the same methods of concealment used by contraband smugglers may be used by terrorists to smuggle arms and explosives to carry out attacks in Singapore.

新加坡总理李显龙称，何时召开大选将取决于疫情。但也表示“如需要在疫情过去前召开选举，必须采取必要防疫措施，确保各政党能有效率地竞选、民众可安全投票。” 随着昨日（13日）选区范围检讨委员会报告出炉，坊间根据以往委会公布新选区地图、再到宣布大选的时程，揣测选举可能最早在一个月后召开。 李显龙则在脸书发文表示“选举必须在明年4月21日前举行，只有在更新选举登记册后才能召开，这过程需耗时一月。” 他重申过去的论述，表示无法确定现今疫情何时结束，可能维持一年或更久，也指对经济的打击和带来的深远影响，可能更甚于过去的全球金融危机。 “我们有两种选择，其一期望疫情能在本届任期结束前就稳定下来，我们得以在正常的状态下举行选举– 但对此我们无法确定。” 但他又指出，如果提早举行，意味着将要在“风口浪尖”下，选出获得全新委任和新任期的政府，可以与国人合力面对当前艰巨挑战。 “如需要在疫情过去前召开选举，必须采取必要防疫措施，确保各政党能有效率地竞选、民众可安全投票。” 他表示当前本地就业、企业和人民生活都处在危机中，而选举日“需取决于最能让新加坡渡过此难关”的因素。 他指武汉冠状病毒（COVID-19）将成为定义这个世代国人的危机，“我们必须团结起来，共同克服这一挑战，并向世界展示新加坡能做到。”
