SINGAPORE — The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has announced that this year’s National Day Rally (NDR) will be held on August 20th.

The annual event, which serves as an opportunity for the Prime Minister to address the nation, will take place at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College Central in Ang Mo Kio, a tradition upheld since 2013.

This yearly address typically falls on the first or second Sunday following the National Day Parade, which is celebrated on August 9th, and offers a unique platform for the Prime Minister to speak directly to the people of Singapore.

The rally will be broadcasted live across Mediacorp channels, ensuring citizens across the city-state can tune in and listen to the Prime Minister’s message.

In the 2022 rally, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong made a monumental announcement with the repeal of Section 377A, a law that previously criminalized sex between men. The Members of Parliament (MPs) subsequently passed legislation in November, successfully repealing the law in a historic stride towards LGBTQ+ rights.

The sameness of cabinet ministers cut from the same cloth, straight from the same assembly line

Augustine Low, a Singaporean commentator, discusses in his latest op-ed how the “degree of training” that Singapore’s leaders go through before moving up the ranks sets them apart from leaders of other countries. However, he points out that to get the full story, we have to ask what purpose this training serves and to what end. According to Low, there is a sameness about the ministers in the cabinet, making it difficult to tell one minister apart from another. They are all cut from the same cloth, straight from the same assembly line, making conformity and groupthink their trademark.
