In a statement earlier today (17 Sep), the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said that no further action will be taken against social media influencer Xiaxue – whose real name is Wendy Cheng – with regard to offensive posts made by her on social media.

The SPF stated that they have consulted the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC), which advised no further action in relation to the said posts as the elements of an offence have not been established beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Police did not provide much details on what exactly the online posts were about, though it is believed that the investigation is related to comments Ms Cheng made about the Workers’ Party (WP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Sengkang GRC Raeesah Khan earlier in July.

Ms Khan’s past tweets on rich Chinese and Christian church leaders caused a stir during the General Election period, so much so that two police reports were lodged against her on 4 and 5 July.

In response to Ms Khan’s tweets in question, Ms Cheng took to her Instagram to say that Ms Khan, a “radical feminist/leftist”, was stirring up “racist sentiments” in her tweets.

She added that Singapore does not need the “poison” from political candidates infecting the nation’s politics.

Ms Cheng went on to defend her stance against Ms Khan.

Following this, a police report was lodged against Ms Cheng on 6 July over an alleged racially offensive tweet back in 2010 that was targeted at migrant workers in Singapore.

As it turns out, Ms Cheng herself was involved in posting something racially offensive on social media.

According to Vignesh Sankar Iyer, who filed the police report against her, the tweet in question read:

“Coz they molest people and f*** our maids and leer at girls and flood little India!! Yeah I’m stereotyping, but f*** u if u say its not true.”

Police issues stern warning to Raeesah Khan over offensive online comments, but no warning issued to Xiaxue

The SPF’s statement on Ms Cheng came shortly after they issued a stern warning to Ms Khan over offensive online comments on race and religion.

“The police have completed their investigations and in consultation with the Attorney-General’s Chambers, have issued a stern warning to Ms Raeesah Khan for the offence of promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion or race,” said SPF in a statement.

The warning was issued for two social media posts made by Ms Khan on 2 February 2018 and 17 May 2020.

The warning also entailed an additional offence of contempt by scandalising the court for the first post she made in 2018.

However, no warning of any kind was issued to Ms Cheng for her case.
