Nearly a month after Nicholas Lim Jun Kai’s voyeuristic offence of filming fellow NUS undergraduate Monica Baey in the bathroom of her student hall of residence came to light in the public eye last month, a 26-year-old male student was arrested by the Police on Sat (11 May) for allegedly committing a similar offence.
The Straits Times reported the Police as saying on Mon (13 May) that the suspect, who resides in the same hall of residence as the 23-year-old victim at Raffles Hall, was identified via closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and follow-up investigations by Clementi Police Division officers, despite having allegedly changed his outfit to avoid being identified.
Police also said that they had received a call for assistance around 8.10 a.m. on Sat, adding that the suspect was believed to have committed similar acts previously, according to investigations.
An NUS spokesperson told ST on Sat that footage was captured via a CCTV camera installed just one day before the incident.
The spokesperson added that “the university is working closely with the police in their investigations, and will take the necessary disciplinary actions” against the alleged perpetrator.
The spokesperson also noted that NUS is currently providing the victim its “dedicated support and assistance”.
Measures such as installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras of better quality, upgrading shower cubicles and toilet locks to increase privacy and security, and increasing the frequency of patrol rounds by campus security officers “are in the midst of being implemented by Raffles Hall”, according to the director of campus security in a safety advisory e-mail to students and staff on Saturday afternoon, ST observed.
“The university is committed to accelerating the implementation of these security enhancements, but in the meantime, we would like to urge all students to remain vigilant, and to report any suspicious activity to NUS campus security immediately,” said the NUS spokesperson.
