Russia is investigating the St. Petersburg metro blast as a suspected ‘act of terror’ (Source : Public Radio International, pri.org).

Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has issued a statement that Singapore strongly condemns the heinous terror attack at the St Petersburg Metro on 3 April 2017 that resulted in numerous deaths and injuries of innocent civilians.  We convey our deepest condolences to the bereaved
“We convey our deepest condolences to the bereaved families, and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” the Ministry stated.
Russian official announced that 11 people passed away and 45 people were wounded due to a bomb which was exploded inside a train carriage in the metro system of Saint Petersburg as it was moving between the Sennaya Ploshchad and the Tekhnologichesky Institut stations.
The Russian authorities stated that investigators suspect the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber who left an explosive device at a metro station. The attacker then was suspected to have boarded the train with another device in a backpack.
Another bomb was found and deactivated by the Police at another metro station, spreading terror amongst people of St Petersburg.
The authorities then announced that it has opened a criminal case over the explosion, saying that it may be charged under the terrorist act.
The Russian authorities also said that it would consider other possible causes, noting that there was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombing. However, Russia’s Anti-Terrorism Committee stated that it was looking for the “perpetrators and organisers of the terror attack”.
MFA stated that the Singapore Embassy in Moscow has reached out to Singaporeans who are e-registered in St Petersburg, and ascertained that all of them are safe.
“Thus far, there have been no reports of Singaporeans directly affected by or injured in the incident.  The Singapore Embassy will continue to monitor the situation closely,” the Ministry said.
MFA advises Singaporeans in St Petersburg to keep in touch with their family and friends so that they know they are safe.
