The Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) announced on 16 December that it will continue free admission for pedestrians visiting the island via the Sentosa Boardwalk for another year.

The SDC said part of the reason of the decision is to support the national effort to bring a car-lite society in Singapore.

Channel NewsAsia reported that a spokesperson said that as the Boardwalk is connected continuously to the Singapore mainland, the extension of the free entry will allow and encourage more guests to enjoy strolling in and out of the island as a pleasant and convenient experience, especially in peak periods.

The spokesperson informed that out of 19 to 20 million annual visitors to the island, about 10 percent enter through the Boardwalk.

Sentosa Boardwalk was opened in 2011 to cross to the island on foot; Sentosa has on-island transportation such as buses, monorail, beach trams and Sentosa Line of the Singapore Cable Car Sky Network, and of course it can be reached by cars.

The no admission fee was first announced for 31 Mar to 31 Dec 2015, as part of Sentosa’s SG50 celebrations that year. Then SDC announced in April that it decided to extend free admission charge until the end of this year.
