SINGAPORE – Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) personnel displayed swift action and heroism when they successfully rescued a cat and extinguished a fire at Block 243 Serangoon Avenue 2 on Sunday (16 Jul) evening.

At approximately 6:10 p.m., SCDF received an urgent alert regarding a fire outbreak at the aforementioned location.

Responding promptly, SCDF units arrived at the scene to find flames engulfing a bedroom on the seventh floor.

Firefighters employed a water jet and a Compressed Air Foam (CAF) backpack to douse the raging fire. Thankfully, no occupants were present in the unit at the time of the incident.

During their operation, SCDF firefighters discovered a cat trapped in the living room of the affected unit. Without hesitation, they rescued the frightened feline, ensuring its safety amid the chaos of the fire.

As a precautionary measure, the police evacuated eight residents from neighboring units to ensure their safety and to facilitate firefighting efforts.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the fire is likely to have been caused by an electrical origin in the affected room.

SCDF had again remind the public on good practices to prevent electrical fires from occurring:

  • Do not overload electrical outlets with electrical appliances;
  • Always switch off appliances when they are not in use;
  • Check the appliance for frayed wires or cracked cords. If observed, the appliance should be repaired or replaced. Do not use faulty appliances;
  • Do not run wires under carpets or mats and keep wires away from hot surfaces;
  • Use appliances and electrical plugs bearing the Safety Mark. The categories of appliances can be found at http://www.consumerproductsafety.gov.sg ;
  • Do not leave batteries or devices charging unattended for an extended period of time or overnight.
