PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia, held a virtual meeting with Elon Musk, the Founder and CEO of SpaceX, on the morning of Friday (14 Jul).
During the meeting, discussions were focused on SpaceX’s potential involvement in the Starlink satellite service, which aims to improve internet connectivity, particularly in rural areas of Malaysia that require minimal physical infrastructure and land to enhance global internet access.
Anwar Ibrahim emphasized Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening efforts towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
“Malaysia has a comprehensive plan and ecosystem, as well as competitive resources, to support the clean energy industry, including electric mobility.”
This initiative is expected to enhance the capabilities and well-being of the Malaysian people, especially in education, agricultural technology, and income generation.
Following a video conference held at the Prime Minister’s Office at 9:30 am, Anwar expressed his appreciation for Elon Musk’s willingness to visit Malaysia and welcomed the potential collaboration.
Anwar Ibrahim also acknowledged and congratulated the company’s interest and investment decisions in Malaysia. He extended his support for the opening of Tesla, Inc.’s headquarters, service center, and brand experience center in Selangor earlier this year.
Also present at the meeting were YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, and YB Fahmi Fadzil, the Minister of Communications and Digital.
Earlier this year, Malaysia media also reported earlier that Tesla Inc has received approval from Malaysia’s International Trade and Industry Ministry to import battery-run electric vehicles (BEVs) into the country, in addition to establishing a head office and network of charging stations.
The company’s presence in Malaysia is expected to create skilled job opportunities and increase local participation in the Tesla ecosystem both domestically and globally.
