Tesla makes official debut in Malaysia with launch of first mid-sized SUV Model Y

Tesla has officially launched its Model Y mid-sized SUV in Malaysia, with three variants available. Potential buyers can inspect the models at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur until October 31. The first deliveries to customers will start in early 2024. Tesla will establish its headquarters in Cyberjaya, Sepang, and plans to set up experience centers, service centers, and supercharging stations in the country.

China is the world’s largest electric vehicle market, and Tesla plans to build a second factory in Shanghai. Musk also expressed opposition to economic “decoupling” between China and the United States.

Indonesian farmers fight for their land in nickel mining boom

Nickel mining in Indonesia, the world’s largest producer, is putting farmers’ land rights and the environment at risk, say residents and rights groups. The boom is driven by rising global demand for metals used in electric vehicle batteries and stainless steel. Dozens of nickel processing plants have sprung up across Sulawesi, home to black macaques, maleo birds and tarsier primates. Some villagers have confronted miners with machetes, while others have detained miners and set heavy equipment on fire. Chinese firms, which invested $8.2bn in Indonesia last year, are among the leading international investors.
