Aljunied GRC Member of Parliament Ms Sylvia Lim urged members of the public to remain calm and keep in perspective as the first Zika cluster of the year was confirmed at Simon Place in Hougang by the National Environment Agency (NEA) on Wednesday (29 March).
According to the NEA, the two confirmed cases were members of the same household within the estate.
Speaking to Channel News Asia during a visit to the area on Thursday morning, Ms Lim said, “Residents who live in this area … are quite used to clusters of mosquito-borne diseases. In the last few years, we’ve also had dengue outbreaks. So they are quite resilient. They generally know what to do and how to protect themselves.”
“This morning, of course, we have seen NEA officers doing thermal fogging of the outdoor areas. And I understand from the manager that we intend to do low-volume misting in all homes. So we’d like to urge residents to cooperate fully,” she said.
“I understand that in the past, some residents had been inspected a few times and there was a bit of fatigue on that. But you never know how things have changed, so please cooperate with the authorities,” she added.
She also urged residents to take precautionary measures to protect themselves, such as applying repellent and wearing long sleeves.
She added that the disease is quite different from dengue as it is especially risky to a particular group of people, namely expectant mothers.
