The National Solidarity Party (NSP) held a walkabout in Sembawang GRC, at Admiralty Place, on the morning of 10 August.
The opposition party seems to be well-received by residents at the GRC despite not having contested there in General Election 2011.
It was the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) which had contested it in the last elections, but has withdrawn from contesting it this time round in the spirit of avoiding a three-cornered fight.
NSP secretary general Hazel Poa had said earlier that her party is looking to work with residents of the GRC who had volunteered with the SDP at the last election.
The NSP also handed out its press statement to the media on its decision with regard to Marine Parade GRC and Macpherson SMC. The party announced that it would withdraw its interest from contesting in the two wards to prevent a three-corner fight between the Workers’ Party and the ruling party, People’s Action Party.
Apart from its intention to contest Sembawang GRC, the NSP is also looking at contesting Tampines GRC and Pioneer SMC for the upcoming General Election.
This means that the party will field 11 candidates this time, less than half of the 24 candidates it fielded in the last elections in 2011.
“At the previous GE (General Election), our strategy was different,” Ms Poa earlier explained. “At that time, the objective was to build name recognition for NSP, so we kind of went out in terms of numbers, so that on a nationwide basis, this name recognition is there. But for this GE, our objective is different. We want to win one constituency.”
