SINGAPORE — A 45-year-old man was taken into custody by the police after a scuffle that occurred at a supermarket at Chinatown on Sunday afternoon (12 Feb).

The police confirmed that they received a report of the altercation at 1 Park Road around 2.30 pm, following inquiries from The Straits Times.

The man was arrested for affray after being brought to the hospital.

Footage of the incident, which took place at the flagship branch of Scarlett Supermarket located in the People’s Park Complex, has been circulating on social media.

The 24-hour store specializes in Chinese imports.

The man, dressed in a black t-shirt, can be seen grappling with a store worker as onlookers observe the altercation. The 30-year-old store worker sustained minor injuries from the fight but refused to be taken to the hospital.  He is currently helping the police with investigations.

Other employees working behind the counters attempted to intervene by using baskets.

Eventually, some Good Samaritans assisted the worker in restraining the man, and subsequent videos showed the police arriving at the scene.

If convicted for affray, may be punished with imprisonment up to one year, a fine of up to $5,000, or both.
