The Online Citizen was awarded the prize for Civil Society Advocate Organisation of the Year at the 2015 Singapore Advocacy Awards on Friday.

“The Online Citizen… has established itself as Singapore’s independent online news source of record, providing investigative news reports and thought-provoking commentary and expanding the space for the discussion of sensitive social and political issues,” said the Singapore Advocacy Awards in a release to the press.

The awards also honoured Dr Imran bin Tajudeen as Most Promising New Civil Society Advocate of the year for his work in architectural and urban history, and TOC co-founder Remy Choo Zheng Xi as Civil Society Advocate of the Year for his work in public interest litigation.

“While all those who were finally picked for the awards are patently deserving, it was no easy task selecting them,” said T Sasitharan, who headed the judging panel. “In every category the choice was made only after impassioned debate and heated discussion. The difficulty of the decisions is a testament to the quality of the candidates and the significance of their contributions to civil society work in Singapore.”

Launched in 2014, the Singapore Advocacy Awards is a peer initiative by civil society advocates to acknowledge and celebrate advocacy in Singapore.
