In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the people in the frontlines have been risking their lives to protect the people and combat the outbreak. British expat in Singapore, Martin Verga, invited all Singaporeans to a special movement that will take place in our homes tonight (30 March) at 8pm.

After watching highlights of the #Clapforourcarers #ClapforNHS by the people in the United Kingdom on Thursday night (26 March), Mr Verga was deeply moved by the act and decided to take it into Singapore. He then posted about this suggestion onto his Facebook on 27 March, expressing his gratitude for the people in service, such as the doctors, nurses, carers, delivery workers, cleaners and supermarket staff.

“After watching highlights of the UK population #Clapforourcarers #ClapforNHS on Thursday night in an emotional setting, I believe we can do our own version of this for Singapore! For the doctors, nurses, carers, emergency services, delivery workers, warehouse workers, cleaners, supermarket staff and everyone else keeping Singapore safe and stocked at this time. We will be forever grateful,” wrote Mr Verga.

He mentioned that he felt proud of being able to live and work in a country where the government had been applauded on the international stage for its response to the outbreak.

“On top of this I could not be prouder to live and work in a country where the government has been applauded on the worldwide stage for its response to the COVID-19 outbreak,” Mr Verga said.

In regards to Singapore’s response in handling the outbreak of COVID-19 as well as being transparent with providing updated information to its people, Mr Verga stated that the Singaporean government should be applauded as well.

“The transparency of what is happening in Singapore with daily updates from gov.sg keeping the population informed with honesty and integrity makes living through this ongoing crisis easier and more comfortable. For this they should definitely be included in the clap!”

Therefore, he suggested holding an event where Singaporeans can take part in their own homes tonight (30 March) at 8pm by clapping as loud as they can from their windows, doors or balconies. The objective of this very movement is to appreciate the people in service who get Singaporeans through this difficult time.

“So how about it, Monday 30th March, 8pm, out of your windows, doors or balconies of your home we can clap as loud as we can to #SGUnited and let the people getting us through this tough situation be appreciated,” Mr Verga invited everyone on his Facebook post.

The Chief Executive of Temasek Holdings, Ho Ching, had also shared this particular invitation on her Facebook page this morning, letting more Singaporeans informed about it.
