As part of the campaign to create a more positive Internet, final year students launch a crowd-speaking initiative to help children with special needs stay safe online
What if your social media influence and reach can actually be translated into money? You can do just that on Broll Day. Broll Day is a new initiative kickstarted by four Nanyang Technological University (NTU) students and Singtel – a day dedicated to raise awareness for the collective good of the Internet.
Through Thunderclap, a social media amplification tool, an automatic message will be posted on every supporter’s Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr account on 15 March 2015 at 3pm.
Singtel will then donate S$3* per account, which goes towards helping children with special needs attend a cyber wellness programme.
(*up to a total of S$3,000)
The message shared on supporters’ social media accounts would be: “I lend my voice to help children with special needs stay safe online. #BrollDay #SingtelDigitalThumbprint”
These children are supported by the Singtel Touching Lives Fund, and come from beneficiaries like APSN Chaoyang School, APSN Tanglin School and MINDS Lee Kong Chian Gardens School.
“Singtel is committed to promoting safe and responsible use of internet and mobile technology, especially cyber wellness and online safety among vulnerable children and youth in this digital age,” said Mr Chia Boon Chong, Associate Director of Group Corporate Social Responsibility, Singtel. “Timely education can minimise risks and maximise the child’s development, especially for children with special needs.”
“By posting a single message at a set time and date, we hope that the hashtag will trend very quickly, boosting visibility for our cause,” said Cassi Yang, a member of the team behind the campaign. “Most of the time, our social media posts are often about ourselves. Broll Day aims to harness the power of social media and showcase the good in netizens. It’s a step towards a more gracious online community.”
The NTU students are also behind the online campaign The Broll Face – the anti-thesis of the Troll – a new avatar advocating positive online behaviour.
