Sengkang MP Louis Chua’s “self-invitation” to HDB event, while unelected PAP candidates turn up with Govt representatives

Elected Workers’ Party MP for Sengkang GRC, Louis Chua, attended an HDB event in his constituency without a formal invite, raising questions about the exclusion of non-PAP MPs from local initiatives. In contrast, unelected People’s Action Party (PAP) figures, including Dr Lam Pin Min and Mr Ling Weihong, actively participated in the event. On 4 June, Mr Chua expressed his surprise on Facebook at not being invited to the event. He stated, “As neither a PA-appointed grassroots adviser nor a grassroots leader, I don’t think I received an invitation from the HDB.” Despite this oversight, Mr Chua attended the event as a community member and noted that he had the “great pleasure of connecting informally with many excited residents.” Elected WP MPs have not been appointed as advisers to the PA GROs in the same way that PAP MPs— even those who are unelected— have in other constituencies. As a result, they are not permitted to attend events like the Edusave Awards ceremony.

Edwin Tong insists on People’s Association’s political neutrality and denies involvement in partisan activities

Singapore’s People’s Association (PA) does not participate in or allow its resources to be used for partisan political activities, says Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Edwin Tong. Responding to questions by Workers’ Party Members of Parliament, Tong emphasized that PA serves all Singaporeans and the government of the day, and invites the Workers’ Party to recognize PA’s value in serving the community.

Kf Seetoh questioned the justification for S$2.26 million expensive tender for “roadside pasar malam space”

Commenting in a Facebook post on Wednesday, KF Seetoh, founder of Makansutra, questioned the $2.26 million tender price for the Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar, and urged the People’s Association (PA) to clarify the justification for the expense. The winning consortium of S-Lite Event Support, TLK Trade Fair and Events, and Enniche Global Trading paid this amount to run the bazaar, with WGS listed as the organising authority. Vendors have struggled with high rental costs and bids needed to secure a space at the bazaar.

Outsourcing of Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar nets People’s Association’s Wisma Geylang Serai S$2.26 million

The Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar has been a long-standing tradition for the Muslim community in Singapore. This year’s event, organized by Wisma Geylang Serai (WGS), has been shrouded in controversy due to the exorbitant rental costs faced by stallholders. The operating right to the annual Ramadan Bazaar was tendered out in November last year and won by a consortium of three companies, S-Lite Event Support, TLK Trade Fair and Events, and Enniche Global Trading, won the bid at an award value of $2.26 million It is interesting to note that despite WGS being listed as the organizing authority for the bazaar, the winning tenderer was responsible for running most, if not all, of the event and paying the tendered amount to the grassroots organization. Essentially, WGS received the S$2.26 million by issuing the tender without doing anything.

Organizers’ defense of Geylang Serai Bazaar rental costs as “within market rental rates” draw skepticism from netizens

The organizers of the Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar have defended their high rental costs, claiming that they are “within market rental rates.” However, this claim has been met with skepticism from some netizens, who question how the costs were determined and suggest that they may only be comparable to neighbouring shopping centres rather than the wider market. Critics have also pointed out that some vendors have struggled to make a profit despite paying between S$14,000 and S$25,000 in rent for a stall, with one kebab stallholder claiming that he had to compete with another kebab shop located less than 50 meters away despite paying $24,000 for his stall. While some commenters have proposed alternative solutions, such as decentralizing the bazaar or highlighting unique and worthwhile stalls, others have suggested that the vendors must have done their calculations and taken calculated risks before committing to taking a stall.

‘Most expensive pasar malam stall?’ Kf Seetoh surprised by S$18,000 a month rental at Geylang Serai Ramadan bazaar

Geylang Serai Ramadan bazaar sees high rental costs, with Makansutra founder Kf Seetoh calling it “the world’s most expensive pasar malam stall.” Nearly 200 units remain unoccupied as vendors face up to S$18,000 in rent for a single unit.
