Former senior civil servant Jasmin Lau and former People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate for Aljunied GRC Victor Lye were seen accompanying Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong during a walkabout in Ang Mo Kio GRC on 13 April 2025.

The trio was observed at Hougang Village, where they interacted with residents, stallholders, and shop owners amid the usual weekend bustle.

Also present were current Members of Parliament (MPs) for Ang Mo Kio GRC, Darryl David and Nadia Ahmad Samdin.

Absent from the walkabout were Gan Thiam Poh and Ng Ling Ling, both also serving as MPs for Ang Mo Kio GRC.

In a Facebook post shared later that day, Lee noted that the team “caught up with many residents” and expressed appreciation for their support and greetings.

“Whether it is sharing your concerns or messages of support, or just a quick hi and smile, thank you for taking time to meet us,” he wrote.

SM Lee stops short of confirming line-up but expresses support for Lau and Lye

Speaking to the media, Lee did not confirm the final team line-up for Ang Mo Kio GRC but said he would be “delighted” to have both Lau and Lye on his team.

Jasmin Lau, 42, was formerly deputy secretary (policy) at the Ministry of Health and recently resigned from public service on 1 April. She was in charge of critical areas such as manpower, financing, and regulatory policies in the healthcare sector.

Lau is one of the eight new faces unveiled by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on 12 April as potential PAP candidates for the upcoming general election.

Commenting on her first grassroots engagement in Ang Mo Kio, Lau said she was pleased to be present and to learn from the seasoned leaders of the area.

“This is my first walkabout… glad to be here with the Ang Mo Kio team, also glad to be standing on the shoulders of giants, and being able to learn from them,” she said.

Lau described her interactions with residents as “warm” and spoke of her approach to public service.

“What I bring to the table is a listening ear, a sincere heart, and my strong hands to serve the residents,” she said.

She admitted feeling both “very honoured” and “a little bit stressed” learning from Lee and others who had served in the area for years.

“So it is with some pressure to come here to learn, and if I do have the chance, and if PM so decides to send me here, I would be very honoured to take up this chance to work with everybody here.”

Lye reflects on past contests and reaffirms commitment to serve

Victor Lye, 63, previously contested in Aljunied GRC in both the 2015 and 2020 general elections under the PAP banner, though the team was defeated by the Workers’ Party on both occasions.

He served as chairman of the PAP Bedok Reservoir-Punggol branch for 13 years before stepping down in February this year.

He handed over duties to his vice-chairman, Dr Adrian Ang.

Reflecting on his next steps, Lye wrote in a previous social media post, “While my chapter here draws to a close, I look forward to new opportunities to serve and contribute to our collective vision of a better Singapore for all.”

Speaking at the Hougang Village event, Lye expressed commitment to serving Singapore regardless of where he is fielded.

“I have served Singapore and Singaporeans the best I can, no matter what the odds. Whether I’m fielded in Ang Mo Kio, or not at all, is not the most important thing,” he said.

Lye highlighted his familiarity with Ang Mo Kio, citing his past residence there and noting that many former constituents from Aljunied GRC frequently visit the area.

Lee praised the experiences that both Lau and Lye bring.

He noted that Lye, now the founder and chief executive of an AI-driven fintech asset management company, possesses valuable private sector expertise in addition to his grassroots work.

As for Lau, Lee emphasised her experience across government ministries and statutory boards, including her time with the Economic Development Board.

He said she could play a key role in coming up with ideas, solutions, and in mobilising people to effect change.

“I think when you have a new person come in, we bring experience from where they were and also hope for how they will grow into their new job,” said Lee.

“I am quite sure that these two will have that potential and will show that performance.”

Three-way fight expected in Ang Mo Kio GRC as SUP and PPP set to challenge PAP team led by SM Lee

In the 2020 General Election, the PAP team in Ang Mo Kio GRC secured 71.9 percent of valid votes against a team from the Reform Party (RP).

Ang Mo Kio GRC is currently the largest Group Representation Constituency, with 161,235 electors, even after the creation of the new Jalan Kayu Single Member Constituency (SMC).

The newly formed Jalan Kayu SMC comprises parts of Ng’s current ward and sections of Gan’s Fernvale ward.

The upcoming general election could see a three-cornered fight in Ang Mo Kio.

The People’s Power Party (PPP), led by secretary-general Goh Meng Seng, has announced its intention to contest the constituency.

The PPP team will be led by party treasurer William Lim, 47, who works in the limousine services industry.

The Singapore United Party (SUP) also intends to stand in Ang Mo Kio GRC.

Its secretary-general Andy Zhu and his team, who had previously contested the GRC under the RP banner in 2020, garnered 28.09 percent of the vote.

So far, the PPP and SUP have not reached an agreement to avoid a three-way contest, increasing the possibility of a split in the opposition vote.
