After the release of 后港 Hougang: The Documentary by The Workers’ Party (WP), many WP supporters and current or former Hougang residents took to social media, expressing deep nostalgia, pride, and appreciation for the area’s unique spirit, resilience, and heritage.
Netizens shared personal stories that underscored the strong community bonds and camaraderie among Hougang residents, particularly under the leadership of former WP chief Mr Low Thia Khiang, who served as Hougang’s Member of Parliament from 1991 to 2011 and was remembered for his sincerity and hands-on approach.
On Sunday (3 November), as part of its 67th anniversary celebrations, WP launched the documentary across social media, including on Facebook and its official YouTube channel.
The film traces Hougang’s transformation from its origins as an agricultural community of Teochew immigrants to a politically symbolic neighborhood known for its resilience and alternative perspectives in Singapore’s political landscape.
Covering key chapters in Hougang’s history, the documentary explores its early days as a fishing and farming village, the urbanization of the 1980s that relocated kampung residents into HDB flats, and WP’s challenges in establishing and managing the Hougang Town Council, showcasing WP’s commitment to serving residents despite complex municipal responsibilities.
More than a celebration of WP’s success, the documentary presents Hougang as a testament to the value of diversity and plurality in Singapore’s political sphere.
It also highlights Hougang’s enduring “kampung spirit,” with residents sharing their experiences of life in an opposition ward, including facing practical challenges like limited lift access in older HDB blocks due to delayed estate upgrades.
Former Hougang Resident Recalls Mr Low’s Genuine Care and Community Dedication
As of 1 pm on 4 November, the documentary has garnered over 60,000 views on YouTube.
However, prominent state-linked media outlets, including Channel News Asia (CNA) and The Straits Times, have yet to cover the release a day after its debut.
One YouTube user, a former Hougang resident, reflected on their experiences and expressed deep appreciation for Mr Low Thia Khiang’s genuine care and dedication to the community.
The user shared a poignant memory of Mr Low attending their grandmother’s wake and regularly visiting to ensure that maintenance and repairs were properly managed.
“That time I was very young and know nothing much about politics. He reminded me of a friendly neighbourhood uncle. That earnest sincerity touched my heart even as a small boy. Thanks for all your contributions.”
Some shared their Teochew heritage and connection to Hougang, expressing that the documentary provided them with a deeper understanding of their parents’ lives in Hougang.
One comment reminisced about childhood in Hougang, highlighting the significance of the wet market, hawker centre, and nearby shophouses, which encapsulated their memories from the 1970s and 1980s.
The user recalled enjoying various local foods, participating in community events like art competitions, and the vibrant atmosphere created by illegal hawkers serving late-night suppers for blue-collar workers.
Additionally, they fondly remembered the unity among the Teochew community and local vendors who brought traditional snacks and meals to the area.
“Hougang Pride”
One netizen expressed pride in being from Hougang, emphasising the community’s resilience against perceived injustices, such as the demolishment of the local market and removal of amenities.
The netizen advocated for giving the Workers’ Party the time and space to grow as a viable alternative to the ruling party, highlighting the importance of having a balanced representation in Parliament to prevent any party from holding excessive power.
Netizens Praise Mr Low and WP for Genuine Commitment to Serving All Hougang Residents
Alongside nostalgia for the Hougang community, some expressed respect for Mr Low and the WP for their dedicated service to Hougang residents, regardless of political affiliation.
They praised Mr Low’s genuine, down-to-earth approach, noting how his sincerity and fulfillment of promises won the hearts of Hougang voters.
Many acknowledged the WP’s resilience and perseverance, celebrating their journey toward becoming a stronger presence with capable candidates who resonate with Singaporeans.
One netizen shared a story about a friend’s parents’ wake, recalling how Mr Low visited late at night, around 11 p.m. or even after midnight, personally offering S$50 from his own wallet on both occasions.
Despite being a civil servant, this friend consistently voted for Mr Low, moved by his genuine gestures and dedication.
A comment emphasised the responsibility of citizens to actively uphold democracy in Singapore, stressing that it requires collective courage and action rather than reliance on the government.
Reflecting on the Loss: The Old Hougang Market’s Role in Community Life
When the documentary addressed the demolition of the old Hougang market, viewers discussed its emotional impact and the vital role the market played in fostering community spirit and social interactions.
One user emphasised that the market served as an ecosystem where residents, particularly the elderly, gathered to share news and enjoy a lively atmosphere, contrasting it with the impersonal nature of shopping malls.
Another netizen noted that the loss of the market contributed to a shift in voter sentiment, suggesting that the PAP’s actions had alienated the community.
