KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA — Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has commenced investigations over Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, PAS (Malaysian Islamic Party) president for accusing new Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as an agent of Zionist Israel.

According to a statement from PDRM secretary Datuk Noorsiah Mohd Saaduddin, Hadi Awang is being investigated under Section 504 and Section 500 of the Penal Code for intentionally insulting and for malicious intent to defame a person.

“We confirm receiving reports on the matter and the investigation is being handled by the Classified Crime Investigation Unit (USJT), Prosecution/Legal Division (D5), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Bukit Aman.”

Hadi Awang will also be investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities.

On 28 November, Hadi also accused Pakatan Harapan (PH) partner Democratic Action Party (DAP) of promoting Islamophobia in the country, aimed at portraying PAS as an Islamic extremist party.

An audio recording was shared on Twitter and other social media platforms earlier, where an unidentified woman spoke in a Kedahan dialect and claimed that Hassan Saad, PAS’ MP for Baling had told her that there was “Israeli influence” in Anwar’s appointment as prime minister.

The lady said Hassan claimed that PAS had secured enough seats to form the government, but Anwar Ibrahim was able to “contact Israel and foreign powers” to interfere in the matter.

The Baling MP had since denied any involvement in the viral audio recording, claiming he had no idea who was behind the audio.

Commenting in response to the allegation of being an “Israel agent”, Anwar Ibrahim said he is unbothered by slanders thrown against him during his maiden speech to his Prime Minister Department’s staff.

“I have been said, as you all know, as being an agent of many countries. I am said to be an agent of America, an agent of Israel, India and now Turkey, ” he said he would rather focus on improving the well-being of Malaysians.
