SINGAPORE — Just last Sunday (30 Oct), Progress Singapore Party (PSP) turned up at Bishan to do an outdoor video shoot for its party’s theme song “March of Change”.

PSP’s Secretary-General, Francis Yuen shared this on his Facebook page, thanking the production crew and also sharing that the party took the opportunity to interact with residents and visit the market, food centre, shops and homes distributing their newsletter “The Palm”.

He wrote, “Amidst curious looks, heart-warming smiles and encouraging greetings many residents took time to chat with us. Most of the discussions centered around the rising cost of living, recession and jobs security. These are undoubtedly the key concerns of our people currently.”

Mr Yuen also noted that they “look forward to more interactions with residents at Bishan-Toa Payoh.”

Party chairman and former Secretary General, Dr Tan Cheng Bock is also seen back in action following his recovery from his lung surgery in July.

It is interesting to see PSP walking the ground and greeting residents in Bishan as it falls under the Bishan-Toa Payoh group representation constituency  (GRC), which it did not contest in the last General Election.

Its candidate, Dr Ang Yong Guan, however, contested at the newly created Marymount single-member constituency (SMC) which was carved out of the GRC in the last election, achieving a respectable score of 44.96 per cent against People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate, Gan Siow Huang.

PSP, founded by Dr Tan, a former PAP member and Member of Parliament, and others in 2019, is one of the three political parties in Singapore to hold seats in the Parliament. It has two Non-Constituency Members of Parliament (NCMP) seats, taken up by Mr Leong Mun Wai and Ms Hazel Poa from the West Coast GRC team fielded in GE2020.

In response to TOC’s query of whether PSP is indeed eyeing to contest the GRC, Mr Yuen only said that the party got to keep all options open.

The four-member Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC has been previously contested by Singapore People’s Party (SPP) for the past three elections since 2011.

The SPP team headed by its Secretary-General, Steve Chia obtained 32.74 per cent against the PAP team headed by Dr Ng Eng Hen in GE2020.

SPP has been still actively walking the ground in the GRC since the last GE, as seen on its Facebook page. The last update by the party was made on 22 October about a block visit that the party conducted.

TOC has written to SPP for comments and will update this article when they respond.
