900,000 HDB households to receive GST voucher rebate in April

Ministry of Finance (MOF) has announced on Monday (2 April) that about 900,000 Singaporean HDB households will receive the next installment of the GST Voucher – Utilities-Save (U-Save) rebate in April.

The rebate is part of the permanent GST Voucher scheme and is distributed every three months, which helps HDB households offset part of their utilities bills and serves to lower overall household expenses.

The ministry stated that the eligible households will each receive a GST Voucher – U-Save of up to S$95 in April depending on their HDB flat type.

It said that the annual rebate has enabled households in one- and two-room Housing Board flats to receive support equivalent to three to four months of their utilities bills on average. For those living in three- and four-room flats, the rebate provides them with support equivalent to one to two months of utilities bills.

MOF stated that eligible households will get an additional S$20 a year for three years, from 2019 to 2021 as announced in Budget 2018, saying, “This will help households  adjust to the carbon tax when it is implemented from 2019. On average, the increase in U-Save will cover the expected increase in electricity and gas expenses for HDB households arising from the introduction of the carbon tax.”
The rebate is expected to cost the Government $265 million in a year, starting from July last year.
