SINGAPORE: A 25-year-old Malaysian man has been sentenced to one year in jail and fined S$4,000 for arranging for two Japanese women to travel to Singapore to engage in prostitution.

According to Shin Min Daily News, police conducted a raid at Marina Bay Sands hotel at around 5:22pm on 7 March, arresting the accused, Wu Wenhong (name transliterated), along with two Japanese women aged 26 and 27.

Wu faced nine charges under the Women’s Charter related to his involvement in operating a prostitution ring.

He pleaded guilty to five of the charges on Monday (30 June), with the remaining charges taken into consideration during sentencing.

Investigations revealed that Wu was recruited into an online prostitution syndicate called “FanzaSG” in August last year by a man named Wang Chisan.

Wu initially worked as a runner, handling customer communications, collecting payments from sex workers, and converting money into foreign currency.

He received a 10 per cent commission, which was later increased to 20 per cent.

Following Wang’s arrest in January this year, Wu assumed his role and became the syndicate’s manager.

On 11 January, Wu contacted a Japanese woman who had previously worked with the syndicate, inviting her to return to Singapore from 27 February to 7 March.

She agreed and brought along another friend. Once the trip was confirmed, Wu began advertising their services on various platforms.

He also enlisted the help of Zhang Kai, 46, a contact he had met through Wang, to book hotel rooms and set up the premises for their activities.

During the nine-day period the women were in Singapore, Wu paid S$2,100 to Zhang and collected a total of S$25,900 from the two women.

After converting part of the money into foreign currency to pay them, he kept between S$3,000 and S$4,000 as profit.

The prosecutor described Wu as a key figure in the syndicate’s management, responsible for coordinating operations with both clients and sex workers, as well as overseeing logistical arrangements.

The prosecution sought a sentence of 11 to 13 months' imprisonment and a fine of S$4,000.

The court ultimately sentenced Wu to one year in jail and imposed the S$4,000 fine.
