Manipulation much? PAP-affiliated individual found in private residents-only group chat in Sengkang
A Reddit post alleging a People's Action Party (PAP)-linked individual infiltrated a residents-only group in Sengkang to promote PAP and discredit the opposition has sparked concerns over political integrity and online manipulation in community spaces.

A viral Reddit post published on 30 April has triggered scrutiny of grassroots political conduct after a man affiliated with the People's Action Party (PAP) was exposed for entering a private residents-only WhatsApp group in Sengkang and using it to promote partisan content.
The group, named “Kampung Helm,” is meant solely for current or former residents of Compassvale Bow, specifically Blocks 274 and 278. It is typically used for estate-related updates, neighbourly advice, and local matters.
According to the original poster (OP), the individual, known as Gilbert, began posting frequently in April, sharing pro-PAP campaign materials while also criticising the Workers’ Party (WP), which currently oversees the Sengkang GRC.
Screenshots from the group chat, shared by the OP, show Gilbert posting links to the PAP Sengkang manifesto with the message: “Let’s work together to Make Sengkang a Better Home for All!” along with visuals of the ruling party’s candidates.
Another post featured a national campaign message titled “Changed World. Fresh Team. New Resolve.”
In addition to these campaign materials, Gilbert made politically charged remarks against WP, stating, “My family and our votes will not be for WP... we cannot condoned a found guilty lying under oath MP and party chief to run our town council.”

He also posted an unflattering image of a WP candidate mid-expression with the caption, “What’s wrong with this photo? Is she ok?”
Another member called the comment uncalled for, prompting Gilbert to respond with, “Any issue with a convicted liar still remaining as leader of a political party?”
The situation escalated when a group member directly asked Gilbert whether he was a resident of Compassvale Helm. Gilbert replied plainly: “No.”
This admission confirmed he had joined the chat under false pretences. Shortly after, he was removed from the group by administrators.
According to the OP, Gilbert had entered the chat via a publicly shared invite link, not through vetting, which has since been restricted.
A separate image shared by a resident showed Gilbert appearing in a PAP walkabout event, standing behind party members on an escalator during a campaign activity, reinforcing his link to PAP grassroots movements.
In a clarifying follow-up post, the OP stressed that the intent was to document and highlight the situation rather than incite personal attacks.
“The intention wasn’t to stir hate... but to share what happened in a factual and transparent way... Do keep it respectful still,” the OP wrote.
They also raised broader concerns, asking: “How many estate chats are being watched, joined or manipulated without residents’ knowledge?” and “Is this an isolated incident or part of a wider tactic?”
The incident has sparked widespread discussion online over the ethical boundaries of political engagement, especially in community platforms designed to remain non-partisan.
Several Reddit commenters called the behaviour hypocritical and manipulative. One noted, “Calling WP liars by pretending to be a resident — the irony writes itself.”
As of 1 May 2025, there has been no public response from the People's Action Party or any acknowledgement from party officials regarding Gilbert's actions or the screenshots circulated online.
This incident has sparked broader concern, not just over Gilbert’s conduct but over a possible pattern of questionable grassroots activism by PAP affiliates.
On 1 May, The Online Citizen reported that a PAP rally speech draft prepared for Bukit Panjang SMC candidate Edward Chia included a line instructing a supporter to shout “SDP town council sucks”—a targeted jab at the Singapore Democratic Party. Though the line was later removed, it had already been circulated to media as part of pre-rally materials.
Chia later stated, “I overruled the draft as this is not my style,” implying internal disagreement over the tactic.
Separately, on 30 April, The Online Citizen reported that PAP grassroots volunteers linked to candidate Shawn Huang had discussed disrupting a Progress Singapore Party (PSP) walkabout in Taman Jurong.
A WhatsApp group titled “TJ PAP” showed volunteers suggesting they occupy tables, dismiss PSP members, and film them distributing flyers. The group was deleted shortly after screenshots were circulated.
While neither of these cases appears to have been authorised at the party’s top level, they raise questions about the campaign culture among grassroots activists. In both cases, plans were seemingly abandoned after public exposure.
In light of these developments, the incident in Sengkang involving Gilbert does not appear to be isolated. Rather, it contributes to a growing perception that segments of the PAP’s ground operation are engaging in ethically questionable or manipulative campaign behaviour, particularly in opposition-held wards.
Despite PAP Secretary-General Lawrence Wong’s recent remarks promoting respectful politics, consensus-building, and rejecting negative politics, these cases have led to scrutiny over whether such values are consistently upheld in practice.
