All primary and secondary schools, junior colleges, Millennia Institute, and Ministry of Education (MOE) Kindergartens will observe a school holiday on 5 May 2025.

This decision was announced by the MOE in a statement issued on 16 April.

The move comes as a result of Singapore’s 14th General Election, with Polling Day officially designated as 3 May.

Polling Day, which falls on a Saturday, has been declared a public holiday by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), following the issuance of the Writ of Election on 15 April.

As 3 May is already a non-school day, MOE has designated the following Monday, 5 May, as a school holiday and day off-in-lieu for both students and school staff.

The ministry clarified that this applies to all staff and students across MOE Kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, junior colleges, and Millennia Institute.

Regular classes will resume on 6 May.

This arrangement is consistent with previous public holiday protocols when such holidays fall on Saturdays, particularly in the education sector.

The MOM also reiterated that Polling Day should be treated like any other public holiday under Singapore’s employment laws.

As such, employees required to work on 3 May should be compensated with either a day off or salary in lieu.

Alternatively, employers may offer time-off-in-lieu, based on a mutually agreed number of hours, especially for employees not covered under the Employment Act’s Part IV provisions.
