Participant dies after completing Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2024
A participant in the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2024 has died after finishing the race. Organisers confirmed the death on 1 December 2024.
SINGAPORE: A participant in the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2024 died on Sunday, 1 December, after completing the race.
The event organisers released a statement confirming the incident on their Facebook page.
“It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of a race participant at Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2024,” the statement read.
According to organisers, the individual required immediate medical attention after finishing the race.
Medical personnel provided care onsite before the participant was transported to Singapore General Hospital.
“Our condolences go out to the participant’s family and friends, to whom we will continue to offer our support. We are grateful to the medical personnel who acted to provide immediate care to the participant,” the statement added.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) responded to a call for assistance at about 7.15am near 1 Marina Boulevard.
SCDF confirmed that their assistance was not required.
This marks the third death in the 23-year history of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon.
In 2016, British national John Gibson, aged 28, collapsed less than 1km from the finish line of the half-marathon.
He was later found to have suffered sudden cardiac death due to arrhythmia. In 2011, 22-year-old Malcolm Sng died after completing the half-marathon due to acute coronary insufficiency caused by a pre-existing heart condition.
The Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon, established in 2002, is a premier event that attracts over 40,000 local and international runners annually.
This year’s race drew more than 55,000 participants from across the globe and was held over three days, featuring five race categories.
Sunday’s events included the marathon, half-marathon, and Ekiden relay race.
The full marathon spanned 42.195km, starting at the F1 Pit Building and concluding at Anderson Bridge. Participation is restricted to individuals aged 18 and older.
The half-marathon, covering 21.1km, shared the same start and finish points, with participants required to be 16 or older.
The Ekiden relay race covered the marathon distance but split it among five team members, with each running between 2.6km and 14km.
