Jay Ishaq Rajoo on TikTok ban: 'What are they so afraid of?

TikTok permanently banned Singaporean content creator Jay Ishaq Rajoo’s account on 30 September 2024, citing violations of community standards. Jay became aware of the ban on Monday morning when he first tried to access his account, only to be informed that it was permanently banned. When searching for his account, it currently shows, "Couldn't find this account". In response, Jay posted a video addressing the ban, questioning the motives behind the decision and expressing concerns that political factors could be involved. Known for his critical content on social and political issues, Jay speculated that his discussions on inequality, government policies, and discrimination in Singapore may have prompted the platform’s action. In his video, Jay expressed disbelief at receiving a permanent ban and asked his audience, “Are the elections near? What are they so afraid of?” He speculated that his outspoken views on topics such as freedom, equality, and discrimination made those in power uncomfortable. He announced the creation of a new account to continue his content, signaling his intention to push forward despite the platform’s decision.

Passionate about the causes driving his video creation

Jay went on to elaborate on the subjects he frequently covers in his videos, particularly his criticisms of Singapore’s governance. He stated that he speaks out against what he perceives as a “mechanical” system led by disconnected leaders. "I speak about policy makers who make policy not based on the needs, but what comes out of the boardrooms from the white board," he remarked, suggesting a lack of empathy and responsiveness in the country's leadership. Notably, Jay has previously received four POFMA directions for his TikTok account over various topics. He directed further criticism at the financial disparity between government officials and ordinary citizens, highlighting that ministers earn millions while many Singaporeans face financial struggles. "I speak about the inequality, the white wealth gap, and the moral prudence," Jay explained, clarifying that he does not begrudge ministers their wealth but finds the disparity unjust, especially when ordinary citizens are expected to make financial sacrifices. This, he argued, creates a double standard where leaders benefit from substantial salaries while encouraging citizens to save for a "rainy day." Jay also voiced concerns over foreign labor, suggesting that local Singaporeans were losing jobs to foreign workers. He described how Singaporeans who have lost their jobs now face competition from "visitors getting off the plane and walking into petty jobs that belong to us." His frustration with this perceived inequality seemed to fuel his belief that his content had become a challenge to powerful forces, potentially leading to the ban. In a more pointed moment, Jay described himself as a “thorn in your shoes,” implying that his critical commentary had hit a nerve with those in power, which might explain TikTok's decision to permanently ban his account. "Clear guidelines needed"

Speaking to TOC about the ban, Jay said there is a need for TikTok to explain its community guidelines and how they are communicated to content creators. "Can we not ask questions of the government?" Jay asked. Considering the hate speech uttered by creators in other countries that remains on the platform, Jay questioned why different standards apply. "It is quite disheartening to see a social media platform taking on, or trying to challenge, citizens' rights. They are putting their foot in, trying to construct democracy as they see it." He added that this applies not only to social media platforms but also to the government through its policies, particularly regarding the POFMA directions it issues. "Why not simply answer questions put forward by citizens, rather than taking draconian measures against them?"
