SINGAPORE  — In a late evening incident at approximately 7:30 p.m., the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) swiftly responded to reports of a fire on the 13th storey of Block 308 in Hougang Avenue 5.

The fire, which originated in a bedroom of a residential unit, was promptly extinguished by firefighters from Sengkang Fire Station equipped with breathing apparatus.

However, the rest of the unit suffered heat and soot damage as a result.

Fortunately, the occupant of the affected unit had managed to evacuate prior to the SCDF’s arrival, ensuring their safety.

As a precautionary measure, approximately 10 residents from neighboring units were evacuated by the police, prioritizing their well-being.

During the incident, an SCDF paramedic assessed a person from the affected unit for smoke inhalation. However, the individual declined hospitalization.

Additionally, a passerby who had assisted in the evacuation of residents from neighboring units was evaluated for smoke inhalation and subsequently transported to Singapore General Hospital for further medical attention.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the SCDF suggest that the fire was likely caused by an electrical fault in the affected bedroom.

Passer-by confirmed hospital discharge in comment on SCDF’s Facebook page

Mr. Dennis Tan, the Workers’ Party Member of Parliament representing Hougang SMC, expressed his sincere gratitude to SCDF officers for their prompt response and assistance at the scene, commenting on SCDF’s Facebook post.

He also wished the kind passer-by who is being treated for smoke inhalation a speedy and complete recovery soon.

“I would like to thank this gentleman as well as a number of our Hougang residents living in blocks 308, 306, and other nearby blocks for selflessly assisted with the evacuation of residents living in the nearby units; you guys are awesome.”

In response to Mr. Dennis Tan’s comment, the passer-by, Muhammad Indra Roslan, stated that he has already been discharged from the hospital.

The SCDF reminds the public of good practices to adopt to prevent electrical fires from occurring:

  • Do not overload electrical outlets with electrical appliances;
  • Always switch off appliances when they are not in use;
  • Check the appliance for frayed wires or cracked cords. If observed the appliance should be repaired or replaced. Do not use faulty appliances;
  • Do not run wires under carpets or mats and keep wires away from hot surfaces;
  • Use appliances and electrical plugs bearing the Safety Mark. The categories of appliances can be found at http://www.consumerproductsafety.gov.sg;
  • Do not leave batteries or devices to charge unattended for an extended period of time or overnight.
