SINGAPORE — The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) foiled an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of duty-unpaid cigarettes into Singapore on Thursday (25 May).

In a Facebook post, ICA stated that a Malaysia-registered lorry was profiled for enhanced checks. During the check, officers found cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes hidden within a consignment of kitchen towel rolls.

According to the authority, a total of 4,999 cartons were uncovered during the checks.

The case was then referred to Singapore Customs for further investigations.

The largest seizure at land checkpoints in the year occurred on 18 January 2023, where at the Tuas Checkpoint, a staggering 12,708 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes were confiscated.
