Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh receives warm homecoming reception after historic Oscar win

PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim received a visit from Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh, the first Malaysian actress to win the Best Actress trophy at the 95th Academy Awards (Oscars).

On Thursday (20 Apr) morning, the meeting was shared on Anwar’s official Instagram story.

In the post, Anwar also expressed his gratitude to the Hollywood actress, born in Ipoh, Perak, for bringing the trophy she won through the film Everything Everywhere All At Once back to Malaysia.

On Tuesday, Michelle Yeoh celebrated her success on the prestigious stage with fans at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur shopping center.

The actress was also celebrated at a special event in Malaysia for the first time, named “Pride of Malaysia Michelle Yeoh Homecoming Public Fan Meet,” complete with the longest red carpet.

Last week, she was reported to have returned to Malaysia early and showed the Oscar trophy she won to her mother, Datin Janet Yeoh, 84.

Michelle Yeoh also brought the trophy to her father’s grave, the late Datuk Yeoh Kian Teik. She returned to her homeland to celebrate her mother Janet’s birthday, which is a yearly must-return event.

Michelle Yeoh made history by becoming the first Asian woman to win the best actress Oscar

On 12 March, Michelle Yeoh made history by becoming the first Asian woman to win the best actress Oscar.

The Hollywood veteran won over Academy voters with her complex take on Evelyn Wang, a Chinese American laundromat owner who is mired in a tax audit, stuck in a crumbling marriage and struggling to connect with her daughter Joy.

Yeoh won top honours over strong performances from Cate Blanchett (“Tar”), Michelle Williams (“The Fabelmans”), Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”) and Ana de Armas (“Blonde”).

“Everything,” directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, arrived at Hollywood’s biggest gala at the top of the nominations pile with 11 chances at Oscars glory, including for best picture.

But even amid such a haul, the 60-year-old Yeoh is praised for her portrayal of middle-class immigrant Evelyn, who must navigate life in America as well as a complex multiverse that contains endless variations of her existence.
