SINGAPORE — A Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) firefighter who is a Full-Time National Serviceman (NSF) died on Thursday (8 Dec) after falling unconscious during a fire-fighting operation at Henderson Road.

According to SCDF, it was alerted to a fire at 91 Henderson Road at about 11.10 am on Thursday.

Upon arrival, the fire was raging inside a unit on the 4th floor, and the corridor was heavily smoke-logged.

Its firefighters, donning breathing apparatus, entered and pushed through the smoke-logged unit with two water jets to engage the fire.

Sometime into the firefighting operation, the NSF firefighter fell unconscious in the kitchen area.

His crew immediately brought him out of the unit and administered cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on him.

An SCDF ambulance crew at the scene also used the automated external defibrillator on him and conveyed him to Singapore General Hospital.

Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“SCDF and his teammates are very saddened by his death, and extend our deepest condolences to his family,” wrote SCDF on its Facebook page.

It noted that the NSF firefighter was part of the first response crew for the fire incident at Henderson, and was bravely carrying out his mission of protecting and saving lives and property.

SCDF is providing assistance and support to the family during this difficult time.

It has also changed its profile pictures on its social media platforms to mourn the loss of its serviceman.

Commenting in a Facebook post on Wednesday, KF Seetoh, founder of Makansutra, questioned the $2.26 million tender price for the Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar, and urged the People’s Association (PA) to clarify the justification for the expense. The winning consortium of S-Lite Event Support, TLK Trade Fair and Events, and Enniche Global Trading paid this amount to run the bazaar, with WGS listed as the organising authority. Vendors have struggled with high rental costs and bids needed to secure a space at the bazaar.

How do you take the PAP out of the PAP man?

Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s resignation from the party and government positions to run for the presidential election may seem like a break from the People’s Action Party (PAP). But it’s not that simple, says Augustine Low. Mr Tharman has been a dedicated PAP member for decades, and his ties to the party cannot be severed so easily. The PAP has a vested interest in ensuring that the elected president is always affiliated with the party. Mr Tharman’s resignation and candidacy are likely to be part of a scripted game orchestrated by the PAP, similar to the case of Mdm Halimah Yacob.

Civic space in Singapore still rated as ‘repressed’ as new report highlights increasing crackdown on civic freedoms across Asia

A new CIVICUS Monitor report reveals that restrictions and attacks on activists and civil society persist across Asia. Out of 26 countries, seven are rated ‘closed,’ eight ‘repressed,’ and seven ‘obstructed.’ In Singapore, freedom of expression and assembly continue to be stifled. The study highlights that 28% of the global population, around 2 billion people, experience extreme levels of repression.
