A 64-year-old Singaporean man who was not vaccinated has died from COVID-19 complications on Monday (16 Aug), said the Ministry of Health (MOH).

The senior man, identified as Case 67560, is the country’s ninth reported COVID-19 death in this month alone.

According to MOH’s daily update on Wednesday (18 Aug), the Singaporean man developed a cough on 2 August and was brought to Raffles Hospital the next day after suffering heart problems.

“He had not been vaccinated against COVID-19, and had a history of End Stage Renal Failure, ischaemic cardiomyopathy, hypertension and hyperlipidaemia,” said the Ministry.

As of Wednesday, 46 individuals in Singapore have passed away from complications due to COVID-19 infection.

In August alone, nine individuals have died so far.

Just two days ago (17 Aug), a 90-year-old fully vaccinated Singaporean man died from COVID-19 complications. The senior citizen, who had a history of chronic kidney disease and hypertension, became Singapore’s first fatality involving a fully vaccinated person.

Prior to that, a 34-year-old Ukrainian man died on 1 August, a 58-year-old Singaporean woman died on 2 August, a 79-year-old Singaporean man who had not been vaccinated and had several underlying health passed away on 4 August, a 63-year-old Singaporean man died on 5 August, an 80-year-old Singaporean died on 7 August, a 69-year-old Singaporean man passed away 11 August, and an 84-year-old local man died on 13 August.

53 new cases of COVID-19 infection in S’pore on Wednesday

Singapore recorded 53 new cases of COVID-19 infection on Wednesday, bringing the country’s total to 66,334 infections.

There were 49 new cases of locally transmitted COVID-19 infection, of which 23 are linked to previous cases and have been placed on quarantine.

Seven are linked to previous cases and were detected through surveillance, while 19 are currently unlinked, said MOH.

One of the new cases is an elderly individual above the age of 70 who is unvaccinated and is at risk of serious illness, the Ministry added.

In addition, there are four new imported cases, who have been placed on Stay-Home Notice (SHN) or isolated upon arrival in Singapore. Three were detected upon arrival in Singapore, while one developed the illness during SHN or isolation.

Condition of confirmed cases & progress of national vaccination programme

According to MOH, 402 cases are currently warded in hospital. Most are well and under observation.

There are currently 26 cases of serious illness requiring oxygen supplementation, and six in critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Over the last 28 days, the percentage of unvaccinated who became severely ill or died is 8.8 per cent, while that for the fully vaccinated is 1.5 per cent, said MOH.

“As of 17 August 2021, 77% of our population has completed their full regimen/ received two doses of COVID-19 vaccines, and 82% has received at least one dose,” the Ministry added.
