26-yr-old Malaysian arrested in attempt to smuggle 1,376 cartons and 740 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes

A 26-year-old Malaysian man was arrested for his attempt to smuggle 1,376 cartons and 740 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes on 28 February at Tuas Checkpoint.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday (4 March), the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said that its officers detected anomalies in the scanned images of the vehicle.

The vehicle was then directed for further checks and the duty-unpaid cigarettes were found hidden in the overhead compartments of the bus.

This case was referred to Singapore Customs for further investigation. The bus is also liable to be forfeited.

“This method of concealment is a cause for concern as similar methods may be used by people with ill intent to smuggle security items into Singapore. The ICA will continue to conduct security checks on passengers, goods and vehicles to safeguard Singapore’s security,” ICA stated.
