Checkpoint Theatre is delighted to open its 2020 season with The Nuclear Family, the hilarious new comedy written and directed by Huzir Sulaiman.

The long-awaited follow-up to the wildly popular classic Atomic Jaya (1998), The Nuclear Family will run from 12 to 22 March 2020 at the Drama Centre Theatre, National Library Level 5.

Synopsis: Running from the past has never been easy. After exiling herself to the United States, Dr. Mary Yuen thought that she was done with nuclear projects… or at least those that are top secret. Two decades and a Malaysian-American daughter later, political pressures send her careening back to Malaysia and the atomic bomb she sabotaged. Amidst government conspiracies, can Mary juggle both the demands of a nation and a teenager?

Written with Huzir Sulaiman’s signature wit and incisiveness, The Nuclear Family is a play for anyone who has ever gaped at the insanity of politics but also craved the comforts of belonging.

“Even while exploring the messy tangles of Southeast Asia, The Nuclear Family is, at its heart, a story of the search for identity and the difficulties of returning home,” remarked Huzir.

The Nuclear Family features Jo Tan, Rebekah Sangeetha Dorai, Munah Bagharib, and Amanda Tee, along with original musical numbers by electronic duo [.gif].

The stellar all-female cast is set to ignite the stage with explosive chemistry as they take on an incredible array of unforgettable characters. With wickedly funny writing and virtuoso acting, The Nuclear Family is sure to be a blast!
