This morning (7 Jan), a baby was found abandoned in a bin at the bottom of a rubbish chute at Block 534 Bedok North Street.

Between about 8am and 9am today, a town council cleaner Mr Patwari Shamin was clearing rubbish from the chute bin when he and his colleague spotted the baby in a bloody bag. The child was crying.

Mr Shamin proceeded to inform the town council of his discovery.

The police told Straits Times (ST) that they had received a call on the incident at about 9.11am. On scene, the paramedics attended to the baby before sending him by ambulance to the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

The police have been making rounds on every floor of the HDB block to investigate the matter, according to ST.

According to the police, the baby has no visible injuries and is in stable condition.

In a Facebook post, Aljunied GRC Member of Parliament and Worker’s Party chief Pritam Singh shared that he had received a message and some pictures from the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council Chairman Mr Faisal Manap in the AHTC MPs groupchat.

Mr Singh said, “A million thoughts crossed my head when I saw the pictures and you can imagine the thoughts expressed through words and emoticons by the other MPs, feelings I am sure many would Singaporeans share.”

Mr Singh went on, “Had the worker not found the blessed child, he/she could have been crushed by the compactor where all rubbish is centrally disposed in the precinct.”

He then thanked the Singapore Police Force (SPF) and staff at the AHTC Kaki Bukit office for their assistance with the incident.

Between 2009 and 2018, 16 babies were found abandoned in the country.
