On Thursday (4 July), Musim Mas Holdings (Musim Mas), a Singaporean-based palm oil conglomerate, donated S$1,000,000 to the Alzheimer’s Disease Association (ADA) to help fund its therapies and programmes.
A cheque for S$1-million was presented to Dr Ng Li Ling, Vice-President of ADA by Mr Alvin Lim, Director and CFO of Musim Mas during a media event at Our Tampines Hub. The ceremony was witnessed by Mr Desmond Choo, Mayor of North East District & Adviser to Tampines GROs.
The contribution will help to boost the ADA’s efforts in supporting persons living with dementia and their caregivers, allowing them to lead meaningful and purposeful lives.
The donation will also help over 300 less-privileged families who have loved one(s) with dementia and are unable to afford the S$72-a-day fees at the ADA’s daycare centres.
ADA programmes to be funded will include virtual reality workshops for caregivers of those with dementia to gain a deeper understanding of the illness, and a public awareness campaign in September.
Besides that, the donation will go towards sponsoring cognitive and physically stimulating enrichment activities for those who attend the ADA’s Family of Wisdom (FOW) programmes.
“We are thankful for the generosity and partnership from Musim Mas. With their donation, it will propel ADA to further extend and improve our programmes and services for our persons with dementia and their families,” said Dr Ng.
“The operational cost to run the Association is expected to rise year-on-year as dementia becomes more prevalent and with more people seeking help. All of us must recognise that it takes a collective effort from corporate organisations like Musim Mas, community partners and members of the public to tackle dementia,” she added.
“Now, big corporations have important roles in catalysing and developing such ecosystem. Big corporations must see themselves not only as part of the global citizenry but they must also see themselves as active players in making this world a better place,” said Mayor Choo as he commended Musim Mas for its generosity.
According to the ADA, it is estimated that there are currently 82,000 people in Singapore with dementia, and the number is expected to go beyond 100,000 by 2030.
Members of the public wanting dementia-related help or advice can call the ADA’s helpline at 6377-0700.
Meanwhile, prospective donors and members of the public can support the ADA’s cause through various platforms here.
