In collaboration with Miss World Singapore 2018, Sian Chay Medical Institution – a charity organization founded in 1901 – organised the Inaugural Beauty With A Purpose Charity Gala 2018, held at Resorts World Sentosa West 2 Ballroom on 2 September 2018, to fulfil the charity mission of providing free TCM consultation and medication to the elderly and needy families in Singapore.
The Guest Of Honour for this event was Mr Melvin Yong, Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC. Special overseas guests included Miss World Organization Founder Mrs Julia Morley, Executive Director of Miss World Organization Mr Steve Douglas, Miss World Philippines Franchise Owner Mr Arnold Vegafria and Miss World 2016 Miss Stephanie Del Valle.
The Beauty With A Purpose Charity Gala 2018 is the first fundraising event organised to support the To’ Puan Dr. Tsao Sui Lan Memorial Endowment Fund, which was launched by President Mdm Halimah Yacob, who is the Patron of Sian Chay Medical Institution, on 21 May 2018.
The Memorial Endowment Fund aims to assist the hardship and welfare cases referred by the Members of Parliament during their weekly Meet-the-People Sessions (MPS) to Sian Chay Medical Institution for support. Those who need help are usually individuals who fall through the social safety net, thus requiring the support and assistance from the community.
Sian Chay Medical Institution has taken the initiative to set up this Memorial Endowment Fund with the support of Dato’ Dr. Tan Hian-Tsin, Patron of Crocodile Foundation, to provide those in need with social assistance. Dato’ Dr. Tan Hian-Tsin has pledged to donate the private art collection of his beloved wife, the late To’ Puan Dr. Tsao Sui Lan, to Sian Chay Medical Institution to support the fundraising efforts for the Memorial Endowment Fund. In addition, Dato’ Dr. Tan Hian-Tsin generously donated $2 million to launch the Memorial Endowment Fund and is making a one-for-one dollar-matching of all donations received for the Beauty With A Purpose Charity Gala, with a cap of $2 million.
Taking inspiration from Mrs Julia Morley’s Beauty with A Purpose charity mission to help the underprivileged in various parts of the world, Organising Chairpersons Dato Sri Sean Wong, who is the official licensee of Miss World Singapore 2018, together with Datin Sri Adelyne Fung, wish to focus on this core mission of providing opportunities for all beauty queens to serve the community and impact the lives of others.
As such, 11 beautiful finalists of Miss World Singapore 2018 will be doing their part to support this meaningful cause by raising awareness to the public and participating in a fashion show during the charity gala. The ready-to-wear dresses and evening gowns are sponsored by renowned ASEAN fashion designers from Cambodia, Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore.
The galas managed to raise a stunning $4 million for charity that evening.
