US President Donald Trump has announced the date and the location of his planned summit with North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un via a Twitter message on Thursday morning (10 May).
Trump made the announcement after welcoming three Americans freed from prison in North Korea as they arrived back in the United States with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
"The highly anticipated meeting between Kim Jong Un and myself will take place in Singapore on June 12," the president tweeted, "We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!"
Trump had previously said he favored holding the meeting at the Demilitarised Zone, the heavily fortified border separating the two Koreas, but the island nation was favored by most of his advisers for the historic meeting focused on the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.
The two leaders are expected to discuss North Korea's nuclear weapons development and testing program, which has heightened tensions between US and North Korea.
Just a few months ago the meeting between the two leaders seemed too far-fetched when they traded threats through the media caused by North Korea's nuclear weapons development and intermittent ballistic missile tests. Nevertheless, the tension has subsided after Kim agreed to postpone nuclear missile tests and to discuss "denuclearization."
Many comments were tweeted on Trump's post, some laud and support the US president:
But for others who have negative view of Trump, condemned and criticized him on their tweets:
