Last year, food wastage in Singapore amounted to 788,600 tonnes of food. And 77 per cent of Singaporeans contribute to this wastefulness.

That was what a survey by electrical appliance company, Electrolux, found earlier this year.

That’s a lot of waste.

So, the company is doing something about it – with a six week campaign to raise awareness through three ways.

First, from now to 22 November, Electrolux is urging you to share a photo of your empty plate at meal times on its website or on Instagram and attached the hashtage, #happyplatesg .

“Together we can raise food waste awareness and help feed up to 1,000 families in need through our charity partner, The Food Bank Singapore,” the company says.

Here’s what Electrolux will do further:

“For every three #happyplateSG uploads, Electrolux will donate a Happy Food Bundle to The Food Bank Singapore.”

The Food Bank is a charity in Singapore which provides free food to the needy. This initiative is expected to benefit up to 1,000 such families.

Second, you can also volunteer to help pack the food bundles.

And third, attend one of the cooking workshops which the company is organising.

And if you are between 18 and 24, you should pay particular attention to this campaign – Electrolux’s survey had found that those between these ages were the biggest generators of food waste.

The survey also found that vegetables and cooked meat were the the overall top three most wasted food in homes.

The Electrolux campaign has gotten off to a good start, with several celebrities posting photos of empty plates online, such as actress Ann Kok, and entertainer Patricia Mok, among others.
