Mistake in ST reporting: WSH maximum fine is not $10,000
By Singapore Rat Race
There seems to be a mistake in the Straits Times’s reporting over the safety lapses by SBS Transit which resulted in the death of a security guard. The maximum fine for violating MOM WSH is not $10,000. (ST source)
SBS Transit could have been fined up to a maximum of $500,000. But for this case of negligence, SBS Transit was only fined $7,000 for causing the death of a security guard. (source)
$7,000 is only 1.4% of the maximum fine. This seems like a slap on the wrist. First there was a fatality in this incident and secondly the gate was left without a motor (hence a risk for toppling over) for 6 months – between October 2010 and March 2011 when the incident occurred.
