Japan parliament expels YouTuber MP who never came to work

Celebrity gossip YouTuber-turned-lawmaker, Yoshikazu Higashitani, has become the first MP to be expelled from Japan’s parliament in over 70 years for failing to attend work. Higashitani, known as GaaSyy, had not been to the House of Councillors since his election in July 2022 and instead remained in Dubai, claiming he may be arrested if he returns to Japan. The fringe party member will be replaced by another member of his party, Seijika Joshi 48, which campaigns for changes to Japan’s public broadcaster.
