Fire breaks out in Geylang Bahru dance studio; Jalan Besar Town Council building next door unaffected

A fire broke out in a dance studio at Geylang Bahru in the early morning on Wednesday (28 July).

In a Facebook post earlier today, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that it was alerted to the blaze at No. 70A Geylang Bahru at about 6.35am.

“Upon SCDF’s arrival, the fire was found well-alight on the second floor of a two-storey premises,” it wrote.

SCDF firefighters immediately deployed water jets around the premises to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading.

11 emergency vehicles and about 40 firefighters were deployed to the incident. At the height of the operation, four water jets were deployed.

According to the SCDF, the fire involved the contents of a dance studio on the second floor of the premises and was extinguished in about one hour.

“Once the fire was under control, firefighters donned breathing apparatus sets and proceeded onto the second floor to locate the seat of the fire.

“Firefighters had to exercise caution as roof tiles directly above them started collapsing,” it added.

The SCDF is currently performing damping down operations, which involves applying water to wet burnt surfaces immediately after a fire is put out so as to prevent potential rekindle of fire from the hot burnt surfaces.

As it turns out, the affected unit is located next to the Jalan Besar Town Council building.
