Seven of the quirkiest university societies in UK
By AKA Asia
Societies are a major part of university life, especially in the UK – the chance to explore new activities, meet new people and possibly jazz up your resume. But lots exist for pure fun!
With the Education UK Exhibition 2017 coming up on Saturday, 11 March, the British Council has put together a list of 7 of the quirkiest university societies in UK.
1. Jailbreak Society – University of Warwick
Each year, students across the country participate in a nationwide “Jailbreak” charity campaign where groups of students attempt as far away from their jail campus as far as possible.
With just 36 hours and restrictions on spending money on transportation, participants have somehow made it to Poland, Morocco and even New York.
2. 20 Minute Society – Newcastle University
You get a random text of where to meet, and you’ve got 20 minutes to get there. Mystery get-togethers are all part of the 20 Minute Society, and they host events like comedy nights, paintball sessions and even ice skating.
Annually, they also run a mystery holiday, members won’t find out where they’re going till they arrive at the airport. So far, they’ve been to cities like Cologne, Amsterdam and Budapest. There’s no telling where they’ll go next!
3. Curry Appreciation Society – University of Bath
As stated on their website, ‘Who doesn’t love curry?’. The society arranges meet-ups for students to mingle while indulging in, of course, curry – and at a discounted price! Known to be one of the largest societies on campus it’s definitely a great way to socialise.
4. Viking Society – University of Plymouth
From crafting your own Viking age clothing and equipment, to battling Viking-style, students are treated to history and cultural learnings about the historic era.
Members of the society enjoy feasts and banquets held throughout the year, along with outing to moors, movie nights and even pub crawls.
5. Stitch ‘n’ Bitch Society– University of Leeds
For those with an inner aunty who loves stitching (and a good bitching)! Exactly what it is, the society comes together to craft, create, knit, crochet, cross stitch and hand saw along with any other craft you’d fancy, while delving deep into the gossip from the halls of residence. Way to kill time, right?
6. Dinosaur Appreciation Society– University College London
Cue the Jurassic Park theme! For T-Rex lovers and budding palaeontologists, the society keeps members updated with fossil discovery updates, dino memes and related events.
But the icing on the cake would be its annual ‘Dino Disco Ball’ where the university’s Jeremy Bentham Room is turned into a ‘Jurassic Wonderland’!
7. Pirate Society – University of Sussex
Yo-ho! Yo-ho! A pirates life for you? If you’re into pirate films and dressing up like Jack Sparrow (when it’s not Halloween), then this society is for you.
From scavenger hunts to cinema trips, they’ll also take you bar hopping in full pirate gear. So drink up me hearties!
So if you’re looking to further your studies in the UK, you might want to mix things up and check out these society groups.
