Prominent figure in Malaysian Chinese Education Movement, Bock Tai Hee, passed away at 79

Bock Tai Hee, the revered “guardian” of Chinese education in Malaysia, passed away at 79 due to COVID-19 complications. Detained under the ISA in 1975 for his advocacy, he dedicated his life to empowering Chinese-Malaysian students and ceaselessly shared his wisdom until the end. His legacy lives on.

South Korean dictator’s grandson offers apology for 1980 massacre

Chun Woo-won, the grandson of former South Korean military dictator Chun Doo-hwan, has apologized for a massacre committed in the 1980s, becoming the first member of his family to do so. The crackdown on a democracy uprising killed at least about 200 people. His apology has been hailed as significant and symbolic. Chun Doo-hwan was convicted of treason over the incident in 1996, but his sentence was commuted by a presidential pardon, and he never admitted involvement in or apologized for the killings.

AWARE calls for careful matching of tenants in HDB’s Single Room Shared Facility Scheme

Singaporean women’s rights group AWARE has expressed concerns over the Single Room Shared Facility Scheme pilot project launched by the Housing & Development Board (HDB), which offers privacy of one’s own room but communal facilities. AWARE suggests tenants be matched sensitively to minimise conflicts, noting its previous experience running a single-mother family project. It also recommends the government repurpose the scheme for vulnerable single women who face violence and lack means to rent on the open market.
