19-yr-old Malaysian youth to be caned lightly seven times in open court for beating and burning stray dog

A Malaysian Chinese youth who abused and set fire to a stray dog last month, will be caned lightly seven times in open court as part of his punishment. The 19-year-old youth, Braden Yap Hong Sheng, was charged with animal cruelty for causing undue pain to a brown female dog in front of premises at Jalan Impian Emas 22, Taman Impian Emas, Skudai, at 1.49 am on 27 March. Yap pleaded guilty to the charge in the Johor Bahru Sessions Court last week. On Tuesday (18 Apr), Sessions Judge Datuk Che Wan Zaidi Che Wan Ibrahim delivered the verdict to cane Yap lightly seven times, and added that Yap should be placed on a one-year good behavior bond with a surety of RM10,000 (approx. 2,255 USD) for his offense. The light caning on Yap will be held in open court at 9am on 21 May.

District Judge says prosecution’s submission on Karl Liew’s sentencing reads like mitigation

Karl Liew, the son of former Changi Airport Group chairman Liew Mun Leong, was sentenced to two weeks in jail for providing false evidence during the trial of Ms Parti Liyani, a migrant domestic worker who was initially convicted of stealing items worth S$50,856 belonging to Liew Mun Leong and his family — out of which S$46,856 worth of items were declared to have been stolen by Karl. Karl was charged for falsely claiming that two pieces of clothing found in Parti’s possession belonged to him and making a false statement to a police officer that he had discovered 119 pieces of clothing belonging to him in boxes packed by Parti. DJ Teo noted that his judgement would be limited to the two charges bought before him as the prosecution has focused only on a small segment of Karl’s testimony at the hearing in State Court and charged Karl Liew for having knowingly offered up false evidence in court in respect of that small segment. The sentencing judge noted that Karl’s false testimony could have resulted in a wrongful conviction of Parti and emphasized the importance of upholding the integrity of the justice system. The judge also observed that the prosecution’s submission read like mitigation for the accused, which the defense copied wholesale. The prosecution had sought the maximum fine of S$5,000, but the judge ruled that imprisonment was necessary for such cases. With remission, Karl is expected to serve nine days out of the two weeks in jail.

Karl Liew sentenced to two weeks jail for lying in case of Parti Liyani

Both the prosecution and Karl’s lawyer had asked for the maximum fine of S$5,000 for Karl. Karl’s claim that he has Parkinson’s disease was taken into account, and the prosecution did not ask for a custodial sentence. While the judge did not state the reasons for the sentence in court, a written judgement is said to be provided to the prosecutors and defence lawyers. Karl will start his sentence on 8 May. Ms Parti, in a statement, said that Karl had shown no remorse and hoped that her case would become the right lesson for everyone.

Chinese netizens express outrage as murder case involving official’s son finally goes to court one year after the crime

The murder of a male journalist by a colleague in Guiyang City, China, has caused outrage among Chinese social media users. The suspect, Zeng Yang, who is allegedly the son of a retired police officer, was only brought to trial more than a year after the incident, during which time he has denied his guilt. The victim’s mother, Ao Linchan, took to social media to expose the crime online, having allegedly been rejected multiple times by local authorities when petitioning the matter to various departments. The victim, Ni Qingqing, was locked in an office and brutally killed by Zeng Yang with a knife and chainsaw after an argument about work-related issues. Zeng Yang calmly filmed a video afterward and bragged about the killing on his social media account. In court, Zeng Yang pleaded not guilty, committed contempt of court behaviors, and even threatened the victim’s family. Weibo users expressed shock that the incident had been hidden from the outside world for over a year and questioned whether justice would be served in a country where people with money and power can kill someone without being punished. The mother of the victim has asserted that she will not accept civil compensation and only requests that Zeng Yang be sentenced to death and executed immediately.
