SINGAPORE: The Workers’ Party (WP) Punggol team has pledged to resume ground engagements and house visits in June 2025, reaffirming its commitment to residents despite its electoral defeat earlier in the month.

On 28 May, Harpreet Singh Nehal, one of the WP candidates for Punggol GRC in the 3 May General Election, shared a video post expressing gratitude to supporters and announcing the team’s plans to remain active in the constituency.

In the video, Harpreet appeared alongside teammates Jackson Au, Siti Alia Abdul Rahim Mattar, and Alexis Dang.

Together, they thanked WP volunteers and residents for their support throughout the campaign, and reiterated their intent to continue community engagement.

Harpreet revealed that the team held a thank-you dinner over the weekend for their core group of Punggol WP volunteers.

“It was a night of good food, laughter, and deep appreciation,” he said.

“This work cannot be done alone. It takes all of us — walking the ground, knocking on doors, listening, encouraging, organising — to move the needle and bring about the change we hope to see.”

He emphasised the role of volunteers, calling them the “heartbeat” of the team’s efforts.

The team plans to begin community outreach again from June onwards, starting with house visits and further initiatives in the coming months.

In addition to the core group, Harpreet also thanked the broader volunteer base who contributed during the General Election, including logistics staff, polling and counting agents, and daily outreach participants.

He added that a party-wide thank-you luncheon would be held soon to recognise their efforts.

To supporters considering future involvement, Harpreet extended a welcome: “To those who’ve already stepped up and volunteered: thank you. And to those thinking about it — the journey is only just beginning.”

In his own message, Alexis Dang acknowledged the outpouring of messages received post-campaign.

“I look forward to seeing more of you on the ground in the coming weeks and coming months,” she said, encouraging more residents to join as volunteers.

Siti Alia expressed similar sentiments, adding a personal touch: “I’m still getting messages like Happy Mother’s Day. Trust me, I’m very grateful for all these messages. We’re excited to see you and we hope to see you soon.”

Jackson Au also extended his thanks to those who supported the team. “Thank you to all our volunteers and the people who came up to us. It means a lot to us and keeps us going,” he said.

The Workers’ Party fielded the team of Harpreet Singh Nehal, Jackson Au, Siti Alia Abdul Rahim Mattar, and Alexis Dang in the newly created Punggol GRC during GE2025.

On 3 May, the People’s Action Party (PAP) retained the ward with 55.17% of the vote, defeating WP’s team, which secured 44.83%. PAP’s slate consisted of Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong and incumbent MPs Janil Puthucheary, Sun Xueling, and Yeo Wan Ling.

The PAP received 63,589 votes, while WP obtained 51,663 in the four-member GRC. Punggol GRC was formed from the merger of previously divided Punggol estates and Punggol West SMC.

Remaining estates such as Loyang and Flora became part of the new Pasir Ris–Changi GRC.

Punggol GRC now includes 123,557 registered electors, and is regarded as Singapore’s youngest town, with more than half the electorate estimated to be aged between 21 and 45.

In the previous 2020 General Election, the former Pasir Ris–Punggol GRC, which then included Punggol estates, saw the PAP secure 64.16% of the vote in a three-cornered contest involving Peoples Voice and the Singapore Democratic Alliance.

Following the GE2025 result, Harpreet stated on 9 May in a Facebook post assuring residents that the WP team would remain present and active in the constituency, despite the defeat.
