SOUTH KOREA: A loyal dog named Pudding, left orphaned after losing its family in the tragic Jeju Air crash, has been rescued by the South Korean animal rights organisation Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth (CARE).

The crash occurred on 29 December at Muan International Airport, claiming the lives of 179 passengers, including Pudding’s nine family members.

The family had travelled to Thailand for a celebratory trip to mark the upcoming 80th birthday of their patriarch, Mr Bae.

Mr Bae, aged 79, was the oldest passenger on the flight.

He perished alongside his wife, Ms Lim (64), their two daughters, a son-in-law, and four grandchildren when the plane struck a concrete wall at the runway’s end.

The extended family lived in a village in Yeonggwang County, South Jeolla Province.

Mr Bae shared his home with his wife, eldest daughter, and six-year-old granddaughter, Jeong.

His eldest son-in-law, who worked in Gwangju, regularly visited on weekends.

The younger daughter and her three children had joined the trip, completing the group of nine who tragically never returned.

Only one family member, a younger son-in-law who did not join the trip, survived the tragedy. He is now left to grieve the devastating loss of his wife and children.

In the aftermath of the crash, Pudding was seen wandering between the family home and the village centre, seemingly waiting for its family to return.

Moved by the dog’s plight, villagers began feeding and caring for Pudding.

However, despite their efforts, the loyal dog often observed passing cars and buses as though searching for its lost owners.

CARE steps into rescue

As news of Pudding’s situation spread, concerned for the dog’s safety, CARE intervened after receiving reports about the dog’s condition.

On 31 December, the group found Pudding sitting quietly outside the village hall.

“When we approached, Pudding ran towards us with excitement, as if still waiting for its family,” CARE shared on Instagram.

The organisation transported Pudding to Seoul for medical care and temporary shelter.

“We determined that it was unsafe for Pudding to roam the village without a caretaker,” CARE said.

They contacted the bereaved family during the funeral and obtained permission to care for the dog until a new guardian could be found.

Pudding was admitted to a veterinary hospital in Seoul, where it is undergoing health examinations.

CARE revealed that the dog had consumed harmful foods, such as onions and chicken bones, likely scavenged during its time alone.

Despite initial uneasiness during the car ride to Seoul, Pudding was described as calm and gentle.

“We are currently ensuring that Pudding receives proper care and medical attention,” CARE stated.

The organisation has pledged to keep Pudding safe in Seoul while continuing discussions to find the dog a suitable new home.

“Pudding will remain in our care until a responsible and loving guardian is found,” CARE added.
