Baey Yam Keng criticises behaviour of attendee who berated elderly volunteer at free haircut event
Senior Parliamentary Secretary Baey Yam Keng expressed disappointment over an incident during a community haircut session, where a participant berated an 82-year-old volunteer for an uneven cut. Baey defended the volunteers’ efforts, stressing respect and gratitude for their dedication to serving the community.
Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and the Environment, Baey Yam Keng, has called for greater respect towards volunteers following an incident at a community service event.
Writing on Facebook on 4 December, Baey shared his frustration over a participant’s conduct at a free haircut session held on 24 November.
The People’s Action Party event, organised monthly since 2014, offers complimentary haircuts and nail trimming to residents, relying entirely on the dedication of volunteers.
On this occasion, an elderly man expressed dissatisfaction with his haircut, claiming the sides were uneven. He confronted the organiser and the volunteer who had cut his hair, stating that her service was substandard and suggesting she retire.
The volunteer, identified as Aunty Jenny, is an 82-year-old pioneer of the initiative.
Baey noted that she has been involved since the programme’s inception and frequently brings homemade snacks for her fellow volunteers.
Despite the man’s verbal abuse, Aunty Jenny continued to serve with her characteristic commitment.
Baey, who was overseas on official duties at the time, commended other residents and hairdressers for stepping in to address the man’s behaviour.
Eventually, another volunteer fixed his haircut. Baey wrote, “I hope residents and those who come for the free haircut respect our volunteers who spend their Sunday afternoons helping the community.” He added that anyone uncomfortable with the quality of service should refrain from participating rather than berating volunteers.
The monthly event draws around 50-60 attendees, with 5-10 volunteer hairdressers giving their time to the initiative.
Baey remarked that in its decade-long history, this incident was the first notable complaint, underscoring the generally positive reception the service receives.
In the comments on Baey’s post, many residents expressed their support for the volunteers and condemned the participant’s behaviour.
One user highlighted their own experience, noting that an accidental nick during a haircut was met with understanding. “I wouldn’t blame her,” they wrote. “This service is free leh… People are volunteering and sacrificing their own time.”
Another commenter stated, “If unhappy, then go to those who charge money for a haircut. These volunteers give up their spare time to help those facing financial challenges.”
Several commenters voiced concern over the lack of gratitude displayed by some attendees.
One wrote, “Beggars cannot be choosers… This is really uncalled for. These are ungrateful people.” Another echoed the sentiment, adding, “Volunteers owe them no favours. Let’s appreciate the sacrifice made to build the community.”
Baey concluded his post by instructing organisers to turn away individuals who disrespect volunteers, ensuring a positive environment for both attendees and service providers.
