Chiang Mai’s golden tiger Ava becomes new tourism sensation
Chiang Mai’s golden tiger cub, Ava, is captivating visitors at Chiang Mai Night Safari. As one of fewer than 100 golden tigers worldwide, Ava’s unique beauty has made her a viral star, joining the ranks of Thailand’s beloved animal icons like Moo Deng the pygmy hippo.
Thailand’s reputation as a haven for adorable animal celebrities continues to grow. Following the viral success of Moo Deng, the slippery pygmy hippo from Khao Kheow Zoo, another captivating creature is taking the spotlight.
Meet Ava, a rare golden tiger cub at Chiang Mai Night Safari, whose unique beauty and charm are drawing thousands of admirers online and in person.
Ava, born in 2021, is part of a rare breed of tigers known as golden or strawberry tigers. This striking coat is the result of recessive genes, making golden tigers extremely rare; fewer than 100 are believed to exist globally.
Chiang Mai Night Safari is fortunate to house not only Ava but also her older sister, Luna, who shares the same exquisite colouring.
Viral sensation in the making
Ava has quickly become a social media darling. Photos of her posted by Chiang Mai Night Safari show her enormous size juxtaposed with her kitten-like expressions.
These qualities have earned her comparisons to an oversized, cuddly feline. Despite her innocence, Ava’s formidable nature as a tiger makes her all the more fascinating.
The comparisons to Moo Deng are inevitable. Moo Deng’s rise to stardom included memes, merchandise, and even songs, turning her into a household name. Ava appears to be following suit, with fans expressing their admiration through comments, shares, and plans to visit the zoo.
Ava’s appeal boosts Chiang Mai tourism
Chiang Mai Night Safari’s golden tiger duo has become a major draw for tourists, particularly families and young travellers. Punlop Saejew, acting president of the Tourism Council of Chiang Mai, highlighted Ava’s potential to significantly boost visitor numbers to the province, particularly during the high season.
He compared Ava’s popularity to the phenomenon experienced by Chiang Mai Zoo when pandas from China arrived decades ago, attracting busloads of students and families. Ava’s fame, he said, could help sustain interest in Chiang Mai as a destination even during the low season.
A golden opportunity for visitors
Ava’s fame comes at a perfect time for Chiang Mai’s tourism revival. The province has seen strong growth since Loy Krathong, with December events such as a countdown celebration, a flower festival, and concerts adding to its appeal. Extended airport hours and additional flights during the New Year holiday week are expected to facilitate even more visitors.
Chiang Mai Night Safari is already preparing for a surge in guests eager to meet Ava and Luna. If Moo Deng’s trajectory is any indication, the golden tiger cubs are poised to become enduring icons of Thailand’s tourism landscape.
