Family of Clementi stabbing suspect engages legal team to defend against capital charge
Toh Chee Hong, a Singaporean man charged with the murder of a grassroots volunteer at an HDB block, has had his family engage a legal team to defend him against the capital charge. The court has scheduled the next hearing for 20 November, allowing time for a psychiatric evaluation to be conducted.
SINGAPORE: A man charged with murder in Singapore has engaged a team of lawyers to represent him as he awaits psychiatric assessment.
According to CNA, Toh Chee Hong, accused of killing 41-year-old Khoo Chin Wah Winson on 21 October at Block 311B Clementi Avenue 4, appeared briefly in court on 30 October.
His legal team comprises Josephus Tan, Cory Wong, Devlin Mohyong, and Silas Siew from Invictus Law. Toh’s family recently engaged the legal team to defend him against the capital charge.
The prosecution, which has completed its investigation, requested that Toh undergo a psychiatric assessment to determine if any mental abnormalities might impact his case.
Toh’s defence lawyers did not object to this request.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for 20 November, allowing time for the psychiatric evaluation to be conducted.
Two days before the court appearance, Toh was brought to the crime scene by police as part of the investigation.
The alleged murder took place at Trivelis, a Housing Board development in Clementi built under the Design, Build and Sell Scheme.
In initial statements, police indicated that Toh and Khoo were known to each other, based on preliminary findings.
While earlier reports speculated that Toh, like Khoo, might have been a part of the same grassroots organisation, the People’s Association (PA) on 22 October has clarified that Toh is not affiliated with any PA grassroots activities.
Khoo, who was well-regarded for his contributions to the local community, had a longstanding role as a grassroots volunteer.
If convicted, Toh could face the death penalty, which is the maximum sentence for murder under Singapore law.
