Singapore’s political horizon is alight with anticipation, with three candidates stepping forward for the ninth elected presidency.

Former GIC investment chief, Mr Ng Kok Song, 75, former People’s Action Party senior minister, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, 66, and former NTUC Income chief, Mr Tan Kin Lian, 75, successfully filed their nomination papers on Tuesday before the noon deadline.

This was announced by the Returning Officer, Mr Tan Meng Dui, at the nomination centre located in the People’s Association headquarters in Jalan Besar.

In his acceptance speech post-nomination, Mr Tan wasted no time in clarifying his presidential vision at the People’s Association headquarters.

He spoke fervently of his determination to harness the President’s Office authority for the betterment of Singaporeans.

“I offer the people of Singapore the opportunity to vote for a president who stands independently from the ruling government,” he emphasized.

Mr Tan pledged to fulfill his presidential duties diligently, honestly, and to the utmost of his abilities, highlighting the safeguarding of Singapore’s reserves and maintaining the integrity of public service.

“I seek your support to serve the people to the best of my ability,” he urged.

Despite aiming to connect with voters in multiple languages, his speech faced a minor hiccup; the Malay segment of his address was cut short due to the strict two-minute time allocation.

Mr Tan was accompanied by his family. His wife, children, and grandchildren stood proudly by his side at the nomination centre.

With the official confirmation of the three candidates, the path is now set for an intense campaign as they vie for Singapore’s presidency.

The eagerly awaited polling day is scheduled for 1 September, designated as a public holiday.
